Family Advisory Board: A Bridge Between Families, Staff, and Community Partners
The Family Advisory Board (FAB) is an essential component of the Family Resource Center (FRC), ensuring that the center remains family-driven, responsive, and accountable to the community it serves. Consisting of nine current members, many of whom are current or former FRC participants, the FAB brings valuable lived experience and firsthand knowledge of the challenges, strengths, and needs of local families. The FRC was developed through a community co-design process, and the FAB continues that commitment by ensuring caregivers remain active partners in shaping the future of the center.
Rather than simply engaging families as service recipients, the FAB promotes shared leadership and decision-making, recognizing caregivers as experts in their own experiences and essential contributors to the success of the FRC.
The purpose of the FAB is to help ensure that FRC services, programs, and supports remain relevant, accessible, culturally responsive, and aligned with community needs. FAB members provide feedback on programs and policies, help identify service gaps and emerging community needs, advise on outreach and engagement strategies, assist with event planning, and contribute ideas for new initiatives and future priorities. Their ongoing input helps the FRC evaluate progress toward its goals and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
By elevating the voices of caregivers and families, the FAB strengthens the Center's ability to develop meaningful, effective services that reflect the realities of those it serves.
The FAB also serves as a bridge between families, staff, and community partners. Members provide critical insight into family needs, barriers to accessing services, cultural responsiveness, and opportunities to better support family well-being. Their perspectives, combined with program data, family feedback, and partner input, help guide decision-making and ensure that family voices remain at the center of the FRC's work.
Participation on the FAB empowers caregivers by building leadership skills, strengthening confidence, increasing civic engagement, and creating opportunities to advocate for their families and community.
When caregivers are meaningfully involved in planning, administration, and decision-making, programs are better positioned to remain responsive, relevant, and connected to community needs. Through the Family Advisory Board, the FRC demonstrates its commitment to equity, respect, trust, and authentic partnership with families.
The FAB helps ensure the Family Resource Center remains a welcoming, inclusive resource where families are not only supported, but also empowered to help shape the programs, services, and systems designed to help all families thrive.
