Prevention and Protective Factors

Prevention is at the heart of Family Resource Center (FRC). Rather than responding only after problems arise, FRC aims to support families early on to prevent crises.

FRC  offers a wide range of resources and services to families to help through their struggles and overcome challenges. Our services are free and available to all families in Olmsted County. FRC is committed to providing a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment for families in our community.

The foundation of Family Resource Center is built upon The Center for the Study of Social Policy’s Strengthening Families research informed approach to increase family strengths, enhance child development and reduce child abuse and neglect. This approach focuses on building upon 5 Protective Factors shown to promote healthy development and strong families:

The 5 Protective Factors

The foundation of Family Resource Center (FRC)  is built upon research by The Center for the Study of Social Policy’s Strengthening Families Project.

This approach increases family strengths, enhances child development, and reduces child abuse and neglect. The focus on building upon The 5 Protective Factors promotes healthy development and strong families. These factors are:

1. Parental Resilience: This refers to the ability of parents to cope with and bounce back from challenges.

2, Social Connections: Families thrive when they have positive relationships with friends, neighbors, and the community.

3. Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development: When parents understand what to expect as their children grow, they are more confident and effective in their parenting.

4. Concrete Support in Times of Need: Families sometimes face unexpected crises, whether that’s a housing issue, employment concerns, disasters, or a disruption in the family. We provide practical support for families to respond to these crisis situations.

5. Social and Emotional Competence of Children: Children thrive when they are able to form positive relationships, communicate feelings, and self-regulate.

All of FRC programs are built to help families develop or improve in one of these areas. In doing so, families build stronger, more resilient foundations to weather the storms of life.
